The notebook is not the novel

By Stewart Ferris

Notes feel like progress. A line overheard, a name, a floorplan of a house that does not exist: these are worth keeping. A notebook can also be a warehouse of beginnings that never has to choose, and choosing is the part that makes a book. Do not confuse the warehouse with the shop.

Capture quickly and without ceremony. If the note has to be beautiful, you will not take it on the bus, and the bus is where half of them happen. A phrase, a fact, a question. Date it if you like. Do not organise it into a system so elaborate that maintaining the system becomes the hobby.

Once a week, steal from the notebook on purpose. One note becomes the next session's starting line, or a detail in the scene you are already in. The rest can stay. An idea that cannot survive contact with the current book is not being wasted. It is waiting, or it was only ever a note.

The danger is the project that lives entirely in planning documents: character bibles, maps, playlists, a future in which the writing will be easy because the preparation was so complete. Preparation makes some things easier. It does not write chapter three. At some point the notebook has to be closed and the file has to be opened.

Keep the notebook. Love it, even. Just do not let it be the only place your sentences are allowed to be unfinished. The novel is the unfinished thing that is trying to become finished. The notebook is allowed to stay a drawer.
